When it comes to professional headshots, editing is both an art and a responsibility. A well-edited image should make you look your best while staying true to who you are. In this post, I want to show you exactly what that means. Below, you will see three versions of my own headshot:
1. The unedited image straight from camera,
2. The professionally edited version that represents my standard,
3. And an over-edited version that takes the editing too far.
These examples help illustrate the importance of balance—because in professional headshot photography, authenticity matters as much as appearance.
The Goal of Editing: Enhancing, Not Transforming
Every professional headshot needs a bit of polish. Cameras can be brutally honest, and even in the best lighting, minor imperfections can distract from the expression and personality that truly matter. My editing process is designed to enhance your natural features, not change them.I call this level of retouching “The Polish Package.” Every client receives it as part of their session. It includes:
• Blemish removal
• Skin softening
• Eye brightening
• Teeth whitening
• Stray hair cleanup
These subtle adjustments ensure your final headshot looks clean, vibrant, and professional without crossing the line into artificial perfection.
The Problem with Over-Editing
Just because editing tools can make someone look absolutely flawless does not mean they should. When the editing becomes excessive, the image starts to lose something essential: you.
In the over-edited version of my own headshot, my skin looks unreal, my features are altered, and the image almost appears AI-generated. While technically “perfect,” it no longer looks like me, and that disconnect can have consequences.
When potential clients meet you in person, they want to recognize the same genuine face they saw online. If your photo looks too filtered or digitally altered, it can create a subtle sense of distrust. People connect with authenticity, not with a flawless, computer-smooth version of a person.
Why Authenticity Builds Trust
Your headshot is often your first impression in today’s digital world. It is how you introduce yourself before you ever shake someone’s hand. A professional headshot that accurately reflects you communicates confidence, approachability, and integrity.
When your photo matches your real-life presence, it helps potential clients feel comfortable right away. They see you as someone they can talk to, collaborate with, and trust to deliver results. Over-editing may grab attention, but authenticity builds relationships.
Comfort and Confidence: The Foundation of Every Session
This balance between polish and authenticity is exactly why I make comfort and confidence such an integral part of my client experience. When you feel at ease during your session, your true personality comes through in your expressions. My editing process simply refines what is already there.
A headshot should represent not only how you look, but also how you connect. It should show the real, confident, professional you. This is the version of YOU that your clients want to work with.
The Takeaway: Real Is Always Better
Professional headshot editing should enhance your best features, remove temporary distractions, and present the most polished version of you... without changing your natural appearance. In a world where AI and filters can easily blur the line between real and artificial, choosing authenticity will always make you stand out.
So, the next time you see your edited headshot, ask yourself:
“Does this look like me, as in the version of me on my best day?”
If the answer is yes, then the editing has done its job perfectly.
